FILE SÃO PAULO 2016 – come cross the limit
The exhibition invites the viewers to experience the blend of electronic art with contemporary art. To immerse in the withdrawal of the lanes of design, game, animation and art categories. In addition, in this immersion, to check out artistic productions that are tricking some aesthetic boundaries. The image distortion. The color and tone saturation. The fusion of things. The combination of real space with virtual space. The outlining and blurring of vision. The synchrony of image and sound. The combination of old and new. The exploration of mathematical formulas. The extrapolation of media limits. The membrane that builds on itself. The disturbance of software order. The integration of exterior and interior.
It is, above all, an invitation to unlock the door of the senses. To enjoy. To perceive and discover the nuances that exist between one thing and another. However, not to recognize them as a geometric line that reinforces the limits that are barriers, but to recognize the intimacy of the in between the potential of transformation. The interaction and the contemplation, the grope and the hearing which allow to amplify our mind because it is in this process of groping that the imagination experiments the sensation of going beyond its limit.

Artists are lateral thinkers, creatives, visionar- ies. As seismographs of society, they are sensi- tive to change. Technology has taken a central role in our lives. How does the global network affect the creation and reception of art? How do artists react to the digitization of our world? UNPAINTED is a new art fair which addresses such questions and brings together artists that use digital technology as a tool and a medium since many years. A total of 50 exhibitors from around the world have announced their participation.

The exhibition focuses on the artistic use of new technologies and opens up views into the future, in various modules. It shows us our new reality, which is shaped by 3-D printers and robots, cyborgs and chimeras, molecules and gene pools, wearable technologies and medical miracles, synthetic life forms, bionic suits and silicon retinas, artificial tissue and repair techniques, and new discoveries in space research, molecular biology, neurology, genetics, and quantum information science. It shows us visions and solutions for twentieth-century problems, such as separating oxygen out of CO2 to combat the climate crisis.

From manual to mental tools, from the hammer to language, over the course of thousands of years human beings have created a culture of tools, an engineering culture that has expanded the boundaries of perception and of the world. The human being has outsourced his bodily functions: the hand to the hammer, the foot to the wheel, the arms to the bow and arrow, the spoken word to the written word, memory to clay tablets and computers, etc. Through the chain of rendering things exterior, the human being transcends evolution. He liberates himself from the violence of nature; he creates an artificial exo-evolution through his tools and through organs made exterior. From exo-biology to exo-planets, from exo-skeletons to »exo-pregnancy«, the contours of a new world deeply marked by technology are taking shape. In the early twenty-first century, art also can no longer stand apart from this technological development.

Traditionally art was focused on representing that which the human eye naturally perceived. When rendering the world of objects visible, painters were trapped in retinal effects and limited to the surface of things. From the microscope to computed tomography, technologies of perception have developed in science. Objects unrecognizable to the naked eye have been artificially made visible. New media bring the technologies of artificial perception, from photography to the computer, into the realm of art. This creates a new awareness of the interconnection of natural and artificial perception, of the object world and the media world, and of art and science. Media are not, however, merely image and sound machines; they are also interfaces in the construction of new realities and new forms of communication. We communicate, negotiate and act through media. The transformation from visual to social media makes clear that the use of media is a vital factor. Media are performative. Their impact is ubiquitous and long-lasting. That is why we speak not only of pictures, but rather of picture acts (Bildakten), not only of language, but of language acts, not only of perception but of acts of perception. Actions have become art forms. Now that a certain amount of overlap exists between the tools of artists and those of scientists, artists’ studios sometimes resemble scientific laboratories and vice versa. Artists today are less in search of subjective expression. Rather, their frames of reference are social systems and scientific structures and methods. This is the reason for new research areas such as art and science labs and art-based research. Scientization of art is beginning to emerge as it did during the Renaissance, creating a sort of Renaissance 2.0.

Use of digital shook all the industries up and spread itself in the whole world by offering every day new abilities to people. The field of creation too. The limits of our own 5 senses are constantly postponed by new discoveries and inventions getting from experimental to common use. We wonder often how we could do in the past without technologies which appears today totally essential. Digital revolution never finished to transform our world so fast that sometimes we can't understand these phenomenons."Augmented Senses" shows visions of creators from two great nations, France and China, who associated to offer two visions, a dialogue built in a journey of artistic installations.

Translife - International Triennal of New Media Art
Edition Fan Di'An and Zhang Ga, The National Art Museum of China
(2011)
Online publication on Translife website : http://2011.mediartchina.org/

The National Art Museum of China presents TransLife, the next installment of the Media Art China series, now instituted as a triennial, in Beijing.
Amidst the global challenges of climate and ecological crises that threaten the very existence of humanity, the exhibition TransLife reflects on the whereabouts of humankind in relationship to nature through an unique perspective and philosophical speculation, calling for citizen participation in facing these imminent challenges with artistic imagination to advocate a new world view of nature and a retooled humanist proposition.
The exhibition is structured by three thematically related components that gradually progress from the discovery of new sensorial potentials that extend our cognitive capacities to the emergence of multiple life forms to biodiversity and an exploration of the symbiosis of cohabitation, revealing emerging concepts of life and provoking contemplation on the biosphere. In doing so, the exhibition also strives to reassess the historical roots and epistemological foundation of the current ecological and environmental predicament, interrogating the notion of subjectivity inherent in the project of modernity and the anthropocentrism derived from that tradition.

TransLife will bring to the Beijing audience an unparalleled roster of 53 artworks by over 80 artists and artist collectives from China, Korea, Japan, Singapore, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, The Netherlands, Latvia, Ireland, UK, Finland, Belgium, Norway, Serbia and Australia.

Electronic media exemplifies the dual meaning of revolution: to always create new while returning to the old. In this dynamic, where multiple centers and margins compete for attention, and borders to be transgressed are shifting, paradigms and practices must be replaced, repackaged and re-appropriated to keep up with the parallel evolutions in art, creativity, culture, society, and politics

ISEA 2012 Albuquerque - Machine wilderness
Edition ISEA
(2012)
174 pages
(Exhibition catalogue)
ISBN 978–1–934435–57–1

The eighteenth international symposium on electronic art, ISEA2012 ALBUQUERQUE: Machine Wilderness, marks the first major international gathering to deeply examine the complex relationships between existing and emerging technologies and wilderness through the intersection of contemporary art, science, culture, and society. As the home of not only many of the most “wild” places in the country, but also some of the most advanced technologies and scientific discoveries, New Mexico and the Southwest region offer the world a site for reflection and inspiration.

The main ISEA2012 exhibition, Machine Wilderness, features work that combines art, science, technology and nature, demonstrating the role art can play in re-envisioning the world. The more than 100 artists are from 16 countries. The exhibition is based at both 516 ARTS and the Albuquerque Museum of Art & History, with off-site projects at the Alvarado Urban Farm, the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science, the Rainosek Gallery at the University of New Mexico School of Architecture & Planning, and the Richard Levy Gallery. Hybridation & art contemporain
Edition Al dante – Aica / Editor : Raphael Cuir
(2013)
134 pages

ISBN-13: 978-2847617924

Human beings share an increasingly precarious co-existence with their natural surroundings. Once regarded as a permanent paradise, the "natural" world has become an elusive last refuge of the wild. The Last Frontier examines the tension between nature, culture, technology, and the built environment through works of art. Faced with globalization, oil spills, overbuilding and overpopulation, artists have both documented and recreated their environments. Where artists at one time recorded their pristine surroundings, now advances in technology allow for fabrication of that open, infinite universe.

The Last Frontier features several renowned artists: Scenocosme : Grégory Lasserre & Anaïs met den Ancxt, Vikky Alexander, David Askevold, Iain Baxter&, Mark Bovey, Ed Burtynsky, Erik Edson, Holly King, Kelly Richardson, and Tom Sherman, American Alan Sonfist, Isabelle Dehay

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is proud to present The Last Frontier in partnership with the Halifax Regional Municipality and Centre Culturel français|French Embassy in Canada and with support from the Canada Council for the Arts and Nova Scotia Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage.

When talking about ISea2011 Istanbul one of the things I believe will remain as a legacy of the symposium is its magnitude. ISEA2011 was the most attended to date with almost 1500 attendees, the last count we had was of 1489, and it had over 100 artists– the ones we could account for who participated and engaged with the city in multiple ways, authorized and non.
The exhibition Uncontainable was part of the official Parallel Program of the 12th Istanbul Biennial, which allowed participating artists and curators to provide diverse perspectives on contemporary developments within fine arts aesthetics.

The exhibition "Sound Art. Sound as a Medium of Art" presents for the first time the development of sound art in the 21th century at the ZKM | Media Museum and in a public space. From Futurism to Fluxus, through to Twitter sonifications, the ZKM charts the history of Sound Art during the 20th century. However, focus is placed on contemporary practices: with works from 90 artists from which approximately 30 new productions from recent years will be represented, the visitor gains insights into the unique sound cosmos of contemporary art. The sound world visualizes its own exhibition architecture, and the exhibition visitor himself becomes the generator of sounds. Visual experience dominates in numerous exhibitions. "Sound Art. Sound as a Medium of Art" emphasizes auditory experience and transforms the visual experience. The visitor is thus provided with the opportunity to become acquainted with an entirely new sound cosmos, which neither radio, film nor the music industry has been able to establish to such an extent. The exhibition "Sound Art. Sound as a Medium of Art" makes new sound perceptions not only experienceable in the museum: passers-by may encounter sounds in the three installations located in the forecourt of the ZKM and five installations in public areas around the city of Karlsruhe. In addition, a selected concert program with outstanding performative projects enriches the exhibition: LaMonte Young, Xenakis, Cage and Ryoji Ikeda are representative of the program’s broad spectrum. The exhibition’s wealth of sounds has also been facilitated by the richness of the archives made accessible to the Karlsruhe public for the first time to this extent. Included are the "unheard avant-garde" from Scandinavia, the Broken Music Archiv from Berlin and curated audiopoints from european archive inventories.

In its exhibition YOU_ser 2.0: Celebration of the Consumer the ZKM engages with the effects on art and society of net-based, global creation and demonstrates for the first time in technologically advanced installations the link between "user generated content" and contemporary art. The new installations presented in the exhibition transfer the potential for users’ creative collaboration developed in the internet into an artistic context and enables the visitors to emancipate themselves. They can act as artists, curators and producers. Visitors to the exhibition are central as users, as emancipated consumers. YOU are the content in this exhibition! YOU are a part of the universe: YOUniverse. YOU are the user of the world and part of the world, and with that a participant in the world. Whoever is a part of the world also bears some responsibility for the world, of which they are a part. Through their participation, the YOU, the user, has the chance to change the world. In the most technologically advanced environments and installations, the most recent state of the art of participation, pARTicipation, is being shown. That reinforces that tendency, which becomes established in the spirit of the enlightenment for democracy, for untrammelled access to education for all and for the creativity of all.

Boom...stroke...aaaaeeeehhhh...swing...crash...push...beeep!
We struggle to put sonic interactions into words - and that is why an exhibition with real examples of sonic interaction design is the best way to experience this new field of research. It allows you to get your hands - and ears - on interactive works that showcase how sound can facilitate interaction in product design, mobile media, communicating scientific data, interactive art, and more.
"Sonic Interaction Design is the exploitation of sound as one of the principal channels conveying information, meaning, and aesthetic/emotional qualities in interactive contexts". That is the definition that has guided a four-year exploration of this innovative and interdisciplinary domain. The works in this exhibition aim to highlight that Sonic Interaction Design "has the potential of affecting everyday life through physical and virtual interactive objects, as today there is the possibility to design and actively control their acoustic response so that it conveys an intended aesthetic, informational, or emotional content"

Editions MCD / M21 UN PANORAMA DES ARTS NUMÉRIQUES
(2008)
336 pages
ISBN : 2-916260-33-1

Due to art historians’ recent interest in the field of animal studies, as well as esse’s desire to contribute to awareness and transformation of humans’ relationship of domination with nature and the realm of the living, we were nevertheless encouraged to take a closer look at this phenomenon. We decided to address the subject through a non-anthropocentric perspective.

Interview with Grégory Lasserre and Anaïs met den Ancxt, David Kousemaker, Laurent Mignonneau and Christa Sommerer.

The series “Kiss of Art” is about a romance between art and technology, it is a tale of a human in love with a machine. Each episode attempts to capture the fleeting moment of fascination and genius present in the process of artistic exchange. The contemporary muse breaks free of conventions, her kiss of art does not discern between robot engineers, conceptual animators or graphic designers. Such ephemeral instances of warmth can now be communicated between a machine and a human by means of intuitive interfaces. The impulse of our touch can incite a hybrid plant to sing in response and the digital video technology admits us entry into the world of exciting and dangerous new ecologies. Kiss of Art is a series of contemporary art inspiration and creative brilliance.
